AEO Fail

The Discipline

Answer Engine Optimization,
explained in plain English

AEO is the work of making your website the source AI cites when it answers your customers' questions. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI “who's the best X near me?” or “what does Y cost?”, the engine composes one answer from a few sources it trusts. AEO is how you become one of them.

Why AEO matters now

The shift from links to answers isn't a forecast — it's in this year's traffic data:

800M+

people use ChatGPT every week (OpenAI, 2025) — and product and vendor recommendations are among its most common uses.

~60%

of Google searches already end without a click; AI Overviews push more answers onto the results page itself.

25%

is Gartner's predicted drop in traditional search engine volume by 2026 as users shift to AI assistants.

4.4×

AI-referred visitors convert better than classic organic traffic in Semrush's analysis — fewer clicks, but far warmer ones.

The four pillars: CSAT

Every AEO requirement hangs off four properties: your site must be Crawlable, Structured, Answerable, and Trusted.

C

Crawlable

AI systems can only cite what they can read. That means letting AI crawlers in (robots.txt, CDN and firewall rules), serving real HTML rather than JavaScript-only content, and publishing machine-readable indexes like llms.txt and a clean sitemap.

S

Structured

Machines need your meaning, not just your words. Schema.org markup (Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article), semantic HTML, and a logical heading outline tell an answer engine what your business is, what it offers, and which passage answers which question.

A

Answerable

Answer engines quote passages, not pages. Content wins when it leads with the direct answer, uses question-based headings, covers the FAQs customers actually ask, and states facts a machine can lift verbatim without losing accuracy.

T

Trusted

Engines prefer sources they can verify: consistent name, location, and offering across every page and profile, dated and maintained content, real authorship, and third-party corroboration — reviews, directories, and mentions that agree with what your site says.

AEO FAQ

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

AEO is the practice of structuring your website so AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Copilot — can crawl it, understand it, and cite it when they answer a user's question. Where SEO competes for a ranking in a list of links, AEO competes to be a source inside the answer itself.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

They overlap but aren't the same. Both reward crawlable sites, clear structure, and genuine authority. But answer engines compose one response from a handful of sources instead of ranking ten links, so AEO adds its own requirements: content phrased as direct, extractable answers; structured data; consistent business facts; and access for AI crawlers that many sites unknowingly block. Ranking #1 on Google does not guarantee being cited by AI.

Which platforms does AEO target?

ChatGPT and ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, and Meta AI — plus the voice assistants built on the same models. They differ in how they retrieve sources, but they reward the same fundamentals: crawlable, well-structured pages that answer questions directly and say clearly who is behind them.

Does AEO replace my SEO work?

No — it builds on it. Solid SEO (clean architecture, real content, authority) remains the foundation, because several answer engines lean on traditional search indexes to find candidate sources. AEO is the additional layer that turns 'findable' into 'citable'. Sites that treat AEO as a checkbox inside SEO usually stop at rankings and never fix the things that block citations.

How do I know if AI can see my site?

Run the free audit. It checks whether AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and others) can actually reach your pages, whether your structured data tells machines what your business is, and whether your content is written in a form an answer engine can quote. Most sites fail on at least one of the three — often without anyone knowing.
